JULY FOOD WRITING PROMPTS
Think about what’s going on in July. For one, fresh fruits and vegetables abound. Take advantage of that and create new recipes using those fruits and vegetables. That might include veggie pizzas, chilled fruit salsas, and handheld fruit pies.
Kids will find eating fresh fruit skewers topped with chopped nuts and drizzled with honey a fun snack. (Use round-ended popsicle sticks for very young children; just make a slit in the fruit to slide the popsicle stick through.)
Frozen fruit cups are sure to be a big hit with kids and adults.
As we’re easing out of Covid, people will be slow to make as many road trips as they have in the past. That doesn’t mean road trip snack ideas won’t be welcomed.
Bento boxes can be fun for kids. Embrace the spirit of bento boxes and create cartoon characters and shapes with the food (seeds for eyes, apple slices cut like flowers, cheese cut like stars).
HOT WEATHER MENUS
Flavored iced teas and frozen cocktails/mocktails are popular in hot weather. Think about how you can use some fresh fruits in your drinks. Blackberries, cucumbers, cantaloupe, mangos, peaches, strawberries, raspberries, and watermelon easily lend themselves to use in cold and frozen drinks.
And don’t forget about tomatoes! They can make an excellent base to drinks.
Remember to create cold and frozen drinks for both adults (with and without alcohol, with wine, beer and liquor) and kids (more colorful, with some fizz).
Fruit popsicles are equally tempting to adults and children.
No-bake dessert recipes are especially welcomed in the summer heat. No-bake frozen cream pies topped with fresh fruit are sure to be a hit. Fruit parfaits are easy to make and can be made as simple or fancy as you like.
BBQ/grilling recipes should include fresh fruits and vegetables, as well. Think about grilled peaches topped with balsamic vinegar and honey. Easy and delicious.
Mangos, corn-on-the-cob, green beans, peppers, summer squash, and zucchini all lend themselves to grilling.
Most people will be spending at least some time poolside this summer. If you can deliver some delicious snacks that are easy to eat (read: handheld) and satisfying, your readers will love you for it.
What about cookie bites? Or mini cupcakes? Because they’re meant to be eaten poolside, be sue to skip the frosting.
Snack mixes are easy to make and eat, but most are also pretty boring. Kick it up a notch with an unusual ingredient or add some spice.
4th OF JULY FOOD WRITING PROMPTS
National holidays, like 4th of July, tend to have a standard menu. For Independence Day, BBQ, hot dogs, and potato salad are among the menu mainstays. If you can think of a new recipe for the 4th of July, you’ll be sure to get a good response from your readers.
Here’s the trick – make it easy and make it familiar.
Nobody wants to spend 12-hours tending a simmering pot for the 4th of July. And nobody wants to show up at the 4th of July picnic with an untried casserole made with goat cheese and octopus. No. Just no.
For example, take something familiar, let’s say hot dogs, and kick them up a step. Chili dogs are familiar. Can you step up the chili? Can you step up the mustard? Or the relish? Or, better yet, all three?
This is the time to tweak, not to completely reinvent.
